A mainstay in the South Grand Dining District recently got a new set of mid-day offerings. VP Square rolled out a lunch menu this spring, featuring a new set of Asian fusion items, bento boxes and you-pick-two combos.

The casual pan-Asian concept from the team behind Cafe Mochi debuted in March 2018, serving specialties such as bánh mì, hot pots and bubble tea in popular flavors such as taro, black milk and mango. Since opening, best-selling items have included tonkotsu ramen, bibimbap, a Hawaiian poke bowl and a VP fried rice special with smoked bacon, sweet and spicy Chinese sausage, barbecue chicken, bean sprouts, egg, green onion, kimchi and carrots.

Last fall, a happy hour menu was also incorporated, available Tuesday through Friday from 4:30 to 6:30pm. The discounted options include a variety of alcoholic beverages and specialty appetizer options such as a spicy chicken lollipop with spicy teriyaki glaze; crispy shrimp stir fried with ginger, scallion and garlic; and tempura green mussels with smoked jalapeño sauce.

The new lunch menu is available during business hours from 11am to 3pm in addition to the regular menu, featuring all new options including four entrees and you-pick-two and bento box options for those looking to sample a variety of items.

“They’re all items I thought would do well for lunch,” chef Duncan Pham says. “They’re smaller, more affordable meals quick for dining in or carrying out.”

A Vietnamese-style curry chicken plate features chicken simmered in coconut milk with lemongrass, onion, carrot and cilantro, served with a crusty baguette. For chicken in another preparation, try it fried tempura-style. The battered boneless chicken thighs come served with turmeric-coconut rice, pickled daikon, carrots, shredded cabbage and cilantro.

Additional entrees include a spicy pork rice bowl with pork tenderloin seared in gochujang pepper sauce with stir fried with vegetables as well as as sweet soy and Asian pear braised beef with stir-fried vegetables and steamed rice. All entrees are served with your choice of miso soup or a house salad.

For more variety, opt for a you-pick-two combo, served with complimentary veggie egg rolls. Choose from the following options: half of a beef bulgogi bánh mì, hot and sour soup with shrimp and pork dumpling, and chicken salad with wasabi dressing. A bento box is also available with four pieces of California roll sushi, two pieces of shrimp tempura, steamed rice with curry chicken, a house salad with ginger dressing and miso soup.

“These items are Duncan’s one-of-a-kind recipes and are really delicious,” says owner Victor Pham. “We hope to make it easier for people who come in for lunch. It’s fast and easy but still very VP.”

Also new to VP Square are a set of rotating housemade Asian desserts. The layered sweet treats come in grab-and-go cups ready to enjoy by the spoonful. Components include ingredients such as mochi, ripe banana, sweetened beans and crushed peanuts. A vegan option features herb grass jelly, tapioca, green tea crystals, coconut jellies and coconut milk.

VP Square is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11am to 9:30pm, Friday through Saturday from 11am to 10pm and Sunday from 11am to 9:30pm. The lunch menu is available from 11am to 3pm.
