Two of St. Louis' hottest restaurants are about to get even more popular.
Balkan Treat Box and Savage have just been named to Bon Appétit's list of "America’s Best New Restaurants 2019." The list, put together annually by deputy editor Julia Kramer, highlights 50 of the best new restaurants across the country, with picks in Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles that will then be narrowed down to the "Hot 10."
Loryn and Edo Nalic cook the wood-fired flavors of Turkey, Bosnia and beyond from an unlikely setup.
Of Balkan Treat Box, which owners Loryn and Edo Nalic opened in Webster Groves, Missouri, earlier this year after finding success with their food truck, Kramer highlights "wood-fired flatbreads, sandwiches, and other extreme forms of deliciousness." The popular restaurant serves traditional Turkish and Bosnian dishes in a fast-casual setting, offering items like the Instagram-worthy pide (Turkish flatbread) and somun stuffed with shaved-to-order chicken döner kebab.
Dishes highlight humble local ingredients prepared with primitive techniques.
Kramer describes Savage, which chef Logan Ely opened in Fox Park last September, as "Nordic precision at a Midwestern chef’s counter." In a tasting menu format, Ely aims to elevate "humble local ingredients prepared with primitive techniques," like crispy chicharrónes-style beets with squid and lettuce or toasted yeast with turnips and preserved onions.
