André Mack

Winemaker and sommelier André Hueston Mack.

Award-winning sommelier, winemaker and designer André Hueston Mack will celebrate the release of his new book, 99 Bottles: A Black Sheep's Guide to Life-Changing Wines, in St. Louis with a party at Brennan's Work & Leisure.

Mack left a desk job to pursue his passion for wine in the early 2000s. It was the right move: In 2003, he won the Chaine des Rotisseurs award for Best Young Sommelier in America, which led him to be hired as a sommelier at Thomas Keller's French Laundry in California. He went on to be head sommelier at Keller's three-Michelin star New York restaurant, Per Se. He founded Mounton Noir Wines, now Maison Noir Wines, in 2007. He also founded Get Fraiche Cru, a graphic design firm, after he designed all of his own wine labels.

This Wednesday's event will include a tasting of Maison Noir wines, heavy appetizers from Bob Zugmaier of Sidney Street Cafe and Frank McGinty of Kaldi's Coffee Roasting Co., and signings of Mack's book. Appetizers will include tasty bites like wild mushroom agnolotti, beef cheek "Philly cheesesteak" and turnip bisque with black truffle.

The event is a part of the This is Not a Restaurant series, which Brennan's started with McGinty in 2016. Most of the events take place at Brennan's BHive, and they offer an opportunity for collaborations with chefs, winemakers, food writers and more. The events tend to be sit-down dinners, but Brennan's marketing and events manager Zach Gzehoviak says that they've always want to do a party event like this one.

"It'll be a kind of unique food, wine, music night, and hearing from a pretty interesting guy who doesn't make it out here very often," he says.

Mack's party will be the 37th event in the series. McGinty and Zugmaier have both participated in This is Not a Restaurant dinners in the past.

A portion from each ticket sale will go to No Kid Hungry, which works to end child hunger in the U.S.

Tickets for the event are available on Eventbrite for $45, or $75 for those who want a signed copy of Mack's book and want to take a bottle of Maison Noir Wine home with them.
