The newest ice cream flavors at Boardwalk Waffles & Ice Cream may chill you out rather than give you a sugar rush.
The waffle and ice cream sandwich shop recently debuted two CBD-infused ice cream flavors: Hempy Vanilla and Chocolate Brownie Blast. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in cannabis that has less than 0.3 percent THC and has become popular for its potentially relaxing and pain-relieving effects. Each serving of the fresh flavors has between 12 and 15 milligrams of CBD, as well as added terpines, another non-intoxicating cannabis compound that adds the "hempy" flavor.
As CBD becomes more readily available locally it’s making its way into the food-and-beverage industry, popping up in everything from coffee to frozen yogurt.
Boardwalk Waffles & Ice Cream owner Eric Moore has been researching the CBD-infused flavors for six months. He has used CBD products himself and wanted to infuse the ice cream that goes into his shop's waffle sandwiches with the beneficial additive. He was able to source the CBD product from Bluebird Botanicals in Colorado, but had problems finding an ice cream producer to fulfill his vision – some companies had questions about the legality of it and didn't want to take the risk.
It all came together when Moore found the Ice Cream Factory in Eldon, Missouri. Not only does the shop love to create new flavors, but Moore says their ice cream presents the perfect consistency. Aside from the two CBD-infused ice cream flavors, Boardwalk Waffles will slowly transition all of their ice cream to Ice Cream Factory flavors.
So far, the overwhelming response to the infused ice cream has been that they have a calming effect. "There's a relaxing vibe that comes from them," says Moore.
The two flavors are now available at Boardwalk Waffles' Maplewood, Missouri, location, but they've been a particularly big hit at the four festivals where they've been served. Moore says that Boardwalk sold two or three times as many CBD-infused flavors as non-infused flavors and people were coming back for seconds and thirds. "The stuff went gangbusters," he says.
The CBD-infused flavors aren't the only new developments at Boardwalk Waffles & Ice Cream: It's moving to a new location in Maplewood around Thanksgiving. The space is expected to seat 40 and Moore says it will slowly incorporate live music and a liquor license.
Boardwalk Waffles & Ice Cream is also getting its first food truck at the end of October. Moore says the most exciting part is that the company will be launching an app on which people can request the truck outside of different events – something no one else seems to be doing right now.
Moore also hopes to have a second food truck rolling by late spring. In the meantime, Boardwalk Waffles & Ice Cream is working on expanding catering and off-site event participation.
