Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. is diving into the sparkling water market.
This summer, the brewery will release Sparkling Hop Water, which is both alcohol- and calorie-free. Urban Chestnut will become the first St. Louis-area brewery to mass produce hop water, joining the ranks of national producers like H2OPS and Lagunitas Hop Water.
Urban Chestnut's hop water is infused with American hops, which co-founder and brewmaster Florian Kuplent says gives its floral notes and a piney hop flavor. The brewery initially produced its hop water as a non-alcoholic beverage options for attendees at last year's LouFest Music Festival. Although the festival was cancelled, Urban Chestnut realized it was onto something.
"Once Loufest was cancelled, we were left with a good number of hop water kegs, so we put it on tap at our Grove Bierhall," Urban Chestnut VP of sales Jon Shine said in a release. "We were blown away by how well it was received and has been selling, so we’ve continued to produce it and keep it on tap ever since."
Shine said the brewery is beginning to explore ideas for other craft beverages, including infusing different variants of the hop water with other natural ingredients like ginseng and CBD.
Urban Chestnut's Sparkling Hop Water will hit shelves this summer; the product will be available in 4-packs of 16-ounce cans in stores where water and soda are sold.
