This past Monday marked two firsts for Joplin: The first snow of the season and Zinc Coffee’s first day in business.

But Austin Daniel, who co-owns Zinc Coffee alongside Matt Johnson, says the snow didn’t stop people from checking out the new shop. He estimates around 500 customers came to support Zinc on its first day.

Johnson and Daniel came up with the idea to open Zinc Coffee six months ago. “We kept hearing about people traveling [outside of Joplin] to get good coffee,” Daniel says. The two started looking for a location shortly after and got the keys to renovate their commercial space in July.

On the menu, you can find classic coffee drinks, with everything from a basic brew to a pumpkin spice latte. Tea drinkers aren’t left out, either – Zinc Coffee also offers loose-leaf tea beverages. In addition to drinks, Zinc Coffee sells baked goods sourced from local businesses including Heavenly Donuts and Magpies Pie Co.

The shop’s interior is equal parts cozy and modern. The white walls give off an airy feel, the wood furniture and wall accents add warmth and the tall garage door windows fill the shop with light. When designing the space, Daniel and Johnson wanted to create a comfortable environment that encourages intimate conversations. “We’re excited to have brought a space where people can come hang out and have community in Joplin,” Daniel says.
