Westport has long been a hub of great burgers, fries and beer, but a new kind of eatery recently settled in on 40th and Broadway.
Serving fresh-squeezed juice, acai bowls, avocado toast and more, Ruby Jean’s Juicery is a healthy haven amidst the bars and pubs. The small shop features bold green and orange accents, a Pinterest-inspired herb garden, an enclosed patio and iPads with Internet connection installed into sleek wood tables. Outside, there's even a corn hole game complete with little bean bags.
Young entrepreneur Chris Goode is the creative powerhouse behind Ruby Jean’s Juicery. Having played college football for Missouri State, Goode has been an athlete all his life, but hadn’t given much thought to his food habits. It wasn’t until the early death of his grandmother, Ruby Jean, that he started to question the importance of a healthy diet. “If she had understood nutrition, she would still be with us today,” Goode says. Tattoos of her memory cover his left arm.
Watching the documentary, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead made Goode question the eating habits he had grown up with. It wasn’t until he was in Los Angeles a few years ago that he fell in love with juicing. Ruby Jean’s uses a centrifugal juicer to whip together a colorful array of bold, delicious juices. Heart of America is a bright red juice made from beets, strawberries, red apples and red cabbage. It is a tart, very boldly beet-flavored juice that's popular with locals.
Vine Street Greens lives up to its name, made from cucumber, green apple, spinach, kale and lime. It is sweet and refreshing without tasting too green. Orange Pillow is a bold orange color, featuring oranges, carrots, peach and bell pepper. The bell pepper really comes through, but pairs well with the peach. Big Chief is a smoothie that tastes like dessert but is perfect for breakfast, made with bananas, strawberries, coconut milk and agave.
Ruby Jean's also offers loaded oatmeal, avocado toast topped with crushed red pepper, tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil; and acai sherbet bowls. In keeping with the shop's healthy attitude, Ruby Jean's is connected to The Port KC, a local gym just down the stairs. Staying healthy never tasted so good.
