After two years in the Crossroads, The Sundry owner Ryan Wing decided to uproot his local food market, café and bar. The Sundry is now partnering with Plexpod, a Kansas City-based co-working community that just cut the ribbon on its second location at 300 E. 39th Street in the Westport Commons.
Although the move from the Crossroads seems sudden, Wing and Plexpod backers have been discussing the idea almost since the day The Sundry opened. The Sundry now has the opportunity not only to serve those at the Westport Plexpod location, but also to cater and sell food in all of Plexpod’s current and planned co-working locations.
Wing says the partnership between The Sundry and Plexpod made perfect sense as it will align the future of how people will eat with the future of how people will work. “We look at ourselves as food makers, so we feel like we totally fit into a collaborative co-working environment,” he says.
The potential for culinary collaboration comes into focus as CultivateKC announces plans to use Plexpod’s on-site green space as an urban farm, growing and providing produce to The Sundry to sell in its market and use in restaurant dishes and grab-and-go meals.
There are also plans to host a sizable farmers' market on site on the weekends once the farm is up and producing. “We are so lucky to have CultivateKC growing a sizable farm right outside our front door,” Wing says. “That will allow us to clearly demonstrate what field-to-fork on a single site looks like.”
But the people who use Plexpod’s co-working space are not the only ones who will benefit from The Sundry’s move. The café will be open to the public, providing much-needed easy access to fresh, healthy local food and beverage options for Midtown Kansas City.
To that end, The Sundry’s new location will offer all of the same dining, drinking and shopping opportunities as the Crossroads space. The café will serve breakfast, lunch and happy hour, in addition to prepared meals, a small on-site market and a full coffee and cocktail bar. “Another benefit to this new space is that we no longer fall under the restrictive Crossroads neighborhood liquor covenants, so here we will be able to serve beer, wine and a full cocktail menu,” Wing says.
A large bar takes up most of the space inside of The Sundry’s new location, with seating for up to 100 at small café tables scattered around the room, a lounge-like living room area and stools set up around the bar area. There will be another 40 seats available on the outdoor rooftop deck.
The Sundry is also in the early stages of developing an on-site culinary "makerspace" called The Sundry Food Lab, which will house its product development efforts and facilitate additional collaborations. The business possibilities of this partnership between The Sundry and Plexpod seem endless.
Look for The Sundry to open inside of the Plexpod Westport Commons by the end of October or early November.
The Sunday at Plexpod Westport Commons will be open Monday through Thursday from 7am to 8pm, Friday through Saturday from 7am to 9pm, and Sundays for brunch from 8am to 3pm.
