Following a few weeks of equipment-related delays, Sarah Breitenstein has at last opened her comfort food diner, Sarah’s On The Hill, in the heart of Strawberry Hill. Currently the restaurant is open for lunch, and serves classic sandwiches, salads, pizza and a handful of baked dishes, including stuffed peppers and baked pastas.
Breitenstein’s 48-seat restaurant is located in a turn-of-the-century building at the corner of Fifth Street and Barnett Avenue. The interior features the building’s original exposed brick walls and hardwood floors. Inside, she has built a custom bar that seats approximately eight. String lights hang from the ceiling and colorful paintings, many of them created by Breitenstein’s friends, line the walls. The space is colorful, comforting and unassuming – much like Breiteinstein’s food.
Co-owner Sarah Breitenstein has worked in the Kansas City restaurant industry for more than two decades.
On the current menu are a handful of sandwiches, including Buffalo chicken and chicken Caesar wraps, as well as a turkey croissant and a French dip. Sandwiches are all served with chips, potato or pasta salad. Also available are hearty 16-inch pizzas. You can make your own or choose from a few specialties, including the Charlie Ryan, which features fresh garlic, shredded chicken, tomato, red onion, sliced green olives, a generous amount of bacon, mozzarella and a drizzle of olive oil. If a whole pizza doesn’t suit, you can also order what Breitenstein calls a “quarter” pizza – basically one fourth of a pie, perfect for one person.
Breitenstein’s specialties are her baked dishes, which currently include two baked pasta and classic-style stuffed peppers. Those peppers are stuffed with ground beef and Italian sausage, along with rice, marinara sauce, mushroom, tomatoes and ricotta and mozzarella cheeses. If you prefer pasta, you can choose from a baked bowtie pasta dish with three types of cheese – cottage, ricotta and mozzarella – with the mozzarella baked until golden and bubbly on top. The pasta supreme takes that same dish and incorporates rich Italian sausage and ground beef into the mix.
Sarah's On The Hill is anticipating arrival of its liquor license. Once that is granted, expect the restaurant to open its bar for beer, wine and cocktail service, and to expand its hours to include dinner service. At that point the menu will expand too, and will include a rotating range of specials as well as dishes like meatloaf, cottage pie and chicken pot pie.
Sarah’s On The Hill is open Monday through Friday from 11am to 3pm. Expanded hours are coming soon.
