Urban Farmhouse Eatery & Pie Company is a restaurant three generations in the making.
Owners Karen and Stephen Edwards first operated Farmers’ Restaurant for 12 years, but they’ve recently revamped the name, concept and menu and remodeled. Their daughter Alyssa Edwards, the restaurant’s pastry chef, says the changes will support local farmers and the Highland, Illinois community.
The new concept is fast casual, but Alyssa Edwards says 95 percent of menu items are made in-house, from scratch, including mac 'n' cheese, potato salad, peach crumble pies, soups, “Urban” tacos and more.
“My grandma Frankie and aunt Mary are the general managers, I’m the pastry chef and my mom is the chef. It’s a woman-run restaurant,” Edwards says. “We wanted to better our concept. It’s been really great. People really enjoy it – they can’t believe how fast their food’s coming out!”
The Edwards family also owns Fire-N-Smoke Wood Fired Kitchen in Troy, Illinois, but it wasn’t their first foray into the restaurant industry. Karen and Stephen met while working at Ravanelli’s Restaurant in Granite City and went on to own the place, which now has three locations.
Ashley Edwards began working at her parents’ restaurant when she was 16 before going on to Le Cordon Bleu. She makes all the pies by hand, usually with local ingredients like pecans from Bartelso, Illinois. The cheesecake is made from her great-grandmother’s recipe.
After knocking down some walls, Urban Farmhouse Eatery’s remodel allowed for a brand-new counter and corrugated metal to cover the walls. Graffiti artists from St. Louis hand-wrote the new menu on chalkboards and added some flair to the decor. Still coming are the Amish-built reclaimed barnwood dining tables.
Urban Farmhouse Eatery and Pie Company is open Monday through Saturday from 11am to 9pm and Sunday from 8 am to 9pm.
