Congrats are in order for several Missouri food-and-drink producers. The winners of the 2017 Good Food Awards were announced Fri., Jan. 20 in San Francisco, and five local companies took home awards.
For the uninitiated, the Good Food Awards highlight American companies making tasty, responsibly produced food and drink – from beer, cider and spirits to chocolate, cheese and preserves. Over 2,000 entries were received this year from across the country, and a panel of 250 judges then whittled that number down to 291 finalists.
In addition to making delicious products, these companies must meet strict environmental and sustainability standards. In other words, "this year’s winners represent the forefront of American craft food and drink, making products that are delicious, respectful of the environment, and connected to communities and cultural traditions."
Kansas City Canning Co. took home two awards: one for its pickled ground cherries and another for its beet-tarragon shrub. Also in the spirits category, Las Californias Shrub Co., based in Lawrence, Kansas, won for its pineapple-cilantro-habanero shrub.
On the sweet side, Columbia, Missouri-based Patric Chocolate won for its Sweet and Sassy Piura Dark Milk bar, Springfield, Missouri's Askinosie Chocolate won for its Black Licorice CollaBARation Bar and St. Louis' Kakao Chocolate took home an award for its Norton Pâtés du Vin.
