As the national media coverage in Ferguson starts to taper off, restaurant and other local business owners say the need for attention and support remains strong.
"When people come out here, they're often surprised that what they see here is different than what they're seeing on TV," says Robb Weisen, general manager at Ferguson Brewing Co. "Moving forward, we're just hoping to create a positive campaign for Ferguson and its up-and-coming dining scene."
Molly Rockamann, founding director of EarthDance, says that the community is still in recovery: "As the national media goes away, the need for strong support in Ferguson will not go away any time soon."
EarthDance has been accepting cash donations through its website and donating its value in produce to St. Stephen's Church, which serves as a local food pantry. EarthDance will also be offering free yoga classes, trauma and relief workshops, and nonviolent communication classes to foster community healing. Find more details here.
The Ferguson Farmers Market has seen larger crowds than ever these past two Saturdays, and Rockamann noticed many were first-timers.
"We had an outstanding attendance, and it's a testament to the people of the greater St. Louis area that they've been showing up full force. Many new faces came to the Ferguson Farmers Market to show their support, were amazed and are now planning to come back because of it."
Head to the Ferguson Farmers Market Saturday from 8am to noon (20 S. Florissant Road) or check out any of the following restaurants this Labor Day weekend to give back to the Ferguson community.
"The Ferguson businesses have been buoyed by the community's support, and we hope that trend only continues," Rockamann says.
Weisen echoes that sentiment: "The first week, there was a definite dip in sales. But after that, we've seen tons of community support from people all over the area."
