Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. is getting into the Schnickelfritz spirit.
The St. Louis brewery has teamed up with Switchgrass Spirits, a newer local distillery, to create Schnickelfritz Bierschnaps. The limited-edition small-batch spirit is distilled entirely from one of Urban Chestnut’s most popular beers, Schnickelfritz, a Bavarian Wheat; it boasts bready and fruity aromas with hints of clove and spice.
According to Urban Chestnut, "Bierschnaps is a spirit that originated in Bavaria, where brewers would distill a batch of beer to capture the essence of the aromas and flavors." This isn't the brewery's first time dabbling in Bierschnaps; in the past, UCBC has worked with a Bavarian distillery to create the spirit using a Doppelbock brewed at its German location in Hallertau.
The company will also offer rye whiskey, bourbon whiskey and apple brandy.
"After working with Brennerei Kraus in Bavaria, we couldn’t wait to bring Bierschnaps to St. Louis," brewmaster and UCBC co-founder Florian Kuplent said in a statement. "We decided to distill Schnickelfritz Bavarian Wheat for our first U.S. batch because of its unique combination of fruity and spicy flavors."
The Common Bond Single Malt whiskey will be available in a year, but you can buy it now to support the local beverage industry.
To distill the beer into schnapps, the brewery teamed up with Switchgrass, which currently offers a bourbon, rye whiskey and rock and rye. Along with several other local craft breweries, Urban Chestnut recently collaborated with the distillery on the Common Bond Single Malt Whiskey project, which raised money for service industry workers affected by COVID-19.
"Our passion is traditional American and European spirits," Switchgrass co-founder Nick Colombo said. "We normally make whiskey and fruit brandy, but this was a really fun project which fits our style. We realized how rare bierschnaps is in the U.S.; very few breweries or distilleries are making it. We are excited to work with UCBC to bring this new category of spirit to Saint Louis."
Schnickelfritz Bierschnaps is sold in 750ml bottles for $30, available for purchase only at the brewery's Grove Bierhall starting this week.
