Maplewood has a new spot for buying artisan foods and learning how to make some on your own.

Tale to Table, a new shop offering artisan food products, cooking classes, vintage cookbooks and more, is now open in the former home of Larder & Cupboard, which closed its doors at the tail end of 2019. The shop has been open for a few weeks, but a grand opening is planned for March 13, 14 and 15.

The shop is co-owned by Brian Pelletier, who is also the owner of Kakao Chocolate, and Kate Hannan, who is one of the managers of Kakao. Pelletier says that during the years that they have worked together, the two discovered that they both have a passion for cooking and the stories that go with cooking.

"We talked about having a store like this," he says.

The "tale" part of the name comes into play with the array of cookbooks that Tale to Table has for sale. Pelletier says that many are vintage and contain treasured recipes; they are trying to identify some great ones to make and sell to the public from their deli case.

Other things you might find in the deli case include local cheeses, cheesecakes, sauces, meats and more. The shop is chock-full of other artisan products – craft jerky, organic granola, Ozark Forest mushrooms – and tools – such as measuring spoons and cups made from sustainable bamboo – from around the country and around the world.

Pelletier says that all of this leads to Tale to Table's cooking classes, which you can find tickets to on Eventbrite

"We want to show people how easy it is to make something with whatever things you have," he says.

Upcoming classes include pasta-, hummus- and pizza-making courses. Tale to Table has a classroom setup with tables and some equipment, but the classes are more demonstration-based. Everyone receives something – whether it's fresh pasta, customized hummus or a ready-to-bake pizza – to take home and share with friends or family.

"What we want to do is to show people how easy it is to enjoy good food," Pelletier says.
