A South City staple now has a new South County location with expanded offerings. J’s Pitaria debuted its second storefront on Nov. 8 in the Concord Plaza Shopping Center in South County, featuring a revised menu of scratch-made Mediterranean cuisine including new items such as cevapi, gyros, falafel salad and more.
Husband-and-wife duo Zamir and Josi Jahic, who are both natives of Sarajevo, Bosnia, opened the original Bevo Mill location of the fast-casual J’s Pitaria in May 2017. There, the specialties include their namesake Bosnian-style pita as well as doner kebabs and ustipci, or housemade fried dough balls. With the second iteration of their concept, the Jahics expanded the savory selection to include even more authentic Mediterranean fare.
J’s Pitaria fills a 1,350-square-foot space previously occupied by a Quiznos. The 45-seat dining room was designed and executed by the Jahics themselves, featuring colorful decorative elements such as hand-built painted crate light fixtures, a text-based mural and a display case featuring mementos from their travels abroad.
The restaurant also features a small market area in the corner with some basic items such as European chocolate, ajvar (red pepper spread), spices, tea and preserves. Guests place their orders at the counter, where warm Mediterranean pies and housemade desserts are ready for grab and go in addition to a full menu of made-to-order savory dishes.
“This location is really more of a J’s Pitaria 2.0, meaning we upgraded some of our items that are popular with our customers,” Josi says. “For example, we added a wider selection of whole and side salads. In addition, the other location doesn’t have a grill. Here, we’ll be using one to make things like our own cevapi.”
The grilled sausages for the Sarajevski cevapi are ground in-house, as are the meats for the Mediterranean pies. The latter is the new location’s presentation for their housemade pita – flaky hand-rolled phyllo filled with meat, cheese, or spinach and cheese. Certified Angus beef gyros are another new addition, and a chicken option is also available.
“We’re using high-quality meats and organic produce, and our signature somun bread is made from scratch and baked in house daily,” Josi says.
The bread is featured in many items such as pljeskavica, a grilled “Mediterranean XL Burger” served with lettuce, tomatoes, kajmak (buttery cheese spread), ajvar and onions. Stews are also new to the menu and rotate daily between options such as beef and vegetable stew, lentil stew and cabbage stew. For dessert, choose from options such as baklava and cupavaci, or sponge cake dipped in chocolate and coconut.
J’s Pitaria’s South County location is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 8pm and Sunday from 11am to 6pm.
