Have you been looking for a way to help out the animals affected by the devastating Australian wildfires? This weekend, you can do so – and grab a sweet treat while you're at it.
Niche Food Group is hosting a bake sale to raise money for those displaced and injured animals at Rockwell Beer Co. this Sat., Jan. 25. Spearheaded by pastry chef Meagan Coltrain, assorted desserts and pastries from Niche Food Group restaurants will be available for sale from 2 to 5pm with proceeds benefiting WIRES, NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc., which is working to rescue native animals in distress.
Coltrain says that the idea came from a post from an Australian pastry chef, Katherine Sabbath, whom she had connected with via Instagram. When Sabbath posted about the horrors of the fires, she felt inspired to help raise donations.

Friends, the #AustralianBushfires are a global emergency. We are at the beginning of an unprecedented bushfire season, exacerbated by the effects of global warming. At present, an estimated one billion animals have died, thousands of people evacuating, over 10 million hectares (25 million acres) burned, lives lost, & ecosystems decimated. While the horror is greater than a human heart can bear, there are ways we can help. If you have other suggestions, please share them! ❤️👇🏼 . Support volunteer firefighters on the frontline by donating to the NSW Rural Fire Service @nswrfs or contacting your local brigade directly: @cfavic, @tasmaniafireservice, @qldfire, @sa_countryfireservice, etc. Support @redcrossau in their work at evacuation centres, helping people get in touch with their loved ones & providing aid. Donate to organisations like @salvosau & @foodbankaus to provide hunger relief in bushfire affected communities. Donate & support animal rescue organisations like @wireswildliferescue, @portmacquariekoalahospital, @animalsaustralia, @wwf_australia, @rspcansw, @rspca_vic, etc. If you have useful household items to donate, head to @givit_aus. At your own home, put out shallow water bowls for thirsty native animals. Restrict water usage. With no decent rain predicted for months, we’ll need every drop. Give life-saving blood or plasma through @lifebloodau. Blood products can prove essential in the treatment of burns & bushfire related injuries. As always, the demand for this resource doesn’t stop & we’ll continue to need 29,000 donations each week. Legend @celestebarber has set up a RIPPER of a fundraiser. International friends can donate! Link in her bio. Use your VOICE! Spread awareness by sharing as much useful information as you can. Write to your local politicians, sign petitions, attend protests, & VOTE against parties who delay action on climate change. . Stay informed by following independent & factual resources such as @abcnews_au & @guardianaustralia. . Sending everyone love, & thank you to our international friends for supporting us Aussies in using this platform for good 🌏💕 . 📷 “Cutest Koala Cake” Jan, 2019. Photos are tap-tagged.
"The world is in a state where the environment is really important, and we need to make sure we're doing everything we can to help in any way," Coltrain says.
Goodies will include typical bake sale treats like cookies, but expect some other luxurious desserts like tiramisu and Pastaria's famous birthday cake.
The event will also include live music with an Australian pop focus to match the theme of the day. Additional donations will also be accepted for those who want to give a little more.
"I would say just come prepared for a good time, good treats and good music," Coltrain says.
