A new Korean carryout concept recently debuted in a freestanding building on Page Avenue. Fire Chicken opened in Overland on Aug. 28, featuring chicken gangjung, or deep-fried, bite-size boneless chicken coated in sweet and spicy sauce. The menu also features shrimp gangjung, rice bowls, ramen and appetizers.
The casual concept comes from husband-and-wife duo Sungmin and Michelle Baik and fills the space previously occupied by Bek-Hee. Sungmin previously owned Blue Sea Japanese in St. Peters. With Fire Chicken, the Seoul natives hope to share their take on gangjung and other traditional Korean dishes with area diners.
“We’ve been thinking about doing this a long time,” Michelle says. “My husband’s parents used to run a gangjung chicken place in Korea. We wanted to share this dish with all different kinds of people.”
The chicken and shrimp gangjung are available in four different preparations, each topped with scallions and sesame seeds: sweet bulgogi sauce; sweet teriyaki sauce; “fire” with jalapeño, garlic and sweet soy sauce; and “red” with spicy and sweet red chile gochujang. All platters are served as combos with rice and a soda. A large size and family combo are also available.
Bowls, served with steamed rice and a boiled egg, include options such as a spicy bulgogi bowl with marinated beef, gochujang, onion, carrot, scallion, green bean and cabbage. Ramen is available with chicken, bulgogi beef, shrimp or veggies. The vegetable-based broth can be made spicy with the optional addition of chile pepper.
Appetizer options include shrimp tempura, mandu (deep-fried pork dumplings), veggie mandu and popcorn mandu topped with cheese and spicy mayo.
“Hopefully everybody can be happy with our dishes,” Michelle says. “We hope you can come enjoy it.”
Fire Chicken only accepts credit cards – no cash or checks. The restaurant offers a half-off discount to firemen and officers in uniform. Delivery is available through services such as GrubHub and Uber Eats.
Fire Chicken is open Monday through Saturday from 11am to 9pm.
