Often considered one of the best-kept secrets in South St. Louis, Tiny Chef is quickly earning a reputation for serving Korean dishes with big flavor.
From a small window inside The Silver Ballroom, a pinball bar just down the street from Bevo Mill, chef Melanie Meyer turns out Korean-inspired street food including tacos and bibimbap bowls that can be customized with a choice of char siu pork belly, char siu tofu, bulgogi chicken and bulgogi beef.
For a hearty, flavorful dish, opt for a bibimbap bowl with char siu pork belly, plus kimchi, cucumber and carrot-sesame salad, black sesame seeds, a fried egg and green onion over Japanese-style rice. You'll also have your choice of two vegan sauces: a sweet and salty orange-ginger-plum Pixie sauce or the spicier soy-based Dragon sauce.
Meyer also offers weekly specials, which have included everything from jjigae (a classic Korean stew), spicy bulgogi chicken soup and fried Spam musubi. Specials are announced on Tiny Chef's social media pages; follow along to see what's new on the menu this week.
Tiny Chef is open for takeout Fridays from 6 to 10pm, Saturdays from 5 to 10pm and Sundays from 5 to 9pm. Diners can access the restaurant through a walk-up window facing Itaska Street.
