In St. Louis' Gate District, Have A Cow Cattle Co. offers an urban farm store experience

A new urban farm store and café strives to bring rural and urban together in St. Louis’ Gate District neighborhood.

Have A Cow Cattle Co. debuted in January and features the brand’s own locally raised beef from its namesake 180-acre Hereford cattle farm in Owensville, Missouri, in addition to several other in-house products including its own roasted coffee beans, hand-harvested honey and freshly baked cinnamon rolls.

The concept comes from husband-and-wife duo Steve and Lisa St. Pierre. The couple previously resided in Edwardsville, Illinois, where they worked as toy retailers. About 14 years ago, they sold their stores and moved to north St. Louis, where they joined area not-for-profit organization Restore St. Louis, which provided outreach programs for the neighborhood. The idea for Have A Cow Cattle Company came about as a way to create jobs for their community.

According to Steve St. Pierre, the mission of Have A Cow is “to foster connection and provide opportunity for folks from different backgrounds to come together, break down cultural barriers and serve one another.”

The approximately 3,500-square-foot ranch-style building features an open floor plan with an island in the center. There, visitors can order food and drinks, as well as purchase items from the bakery case, meat cooler and retail shop. The façade features a country-style wraparound porch with outdoor seating,  and pull-down garage doors connect the patio to the barn-themed interior dining area and store.

From the food menu, choose from signatures such as the Have A Cow Burger, a five-ounce flame-broiled burger served with lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion on a brioche bun, available with optional additions including cheese, bacon, fried egg or avocado. Build-your-own salads are available as well as sides such as fries, chili and St. Pierre’s personal favorite: baked hominy casserole topped with bread crumbs and cheese.

Breakfast-all-day options include pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and omelets. While St. Pierre proudly stocks his bakery case with items from local company Perfectly Pastry Bakery, he was adamant about having freshly baked cinnamon rolls made from scratch available each morning. His picture-perfect version is tall with discernible layers permeated by gooey frosting. Choose from a classic cream cheese topped bun or a salted caramel-iced option.

On the retail side, guests can peruse a selection of items including toys, books, soap and more. Have A Cow offers its hormone-free, farm-raised beef in cuts such as rib eyes, roast and briskets, as well as its own brand of honey, Sweet Justice Honey, harvested from hives at the Owensville farm. The house coffee, dubbed Barbed Wire Brew, is roasted at local co-op First Crack Coffee, available by the bag in two different styles.

Have A Cow Cattle Co. is currently Monday through Wednesday from 7am to 3pm and Thursday through Saturday from 7am to 8pm.
