If you're a St. Louis ex-pat who has trouble finding your favorite dessert, one local restaurant just made it a little easier for you. 

Russell's Café & Bakery announced today that it will now ship its "gooey butter" across the country. Preorders are live, but shipping won't begin until Dec. 14. 

Connoisseurs will notice that Russell's does not refer to its gooey butter desserts as gooey butter cake, given that cake is subbed out for a shortbread crust, but the filling is still the dense and rich gooey butter mix that is instantly recognizable to St. Louisans.

“You’ll notice that we always refer to ours as just Gooey Butter – that is intentional," chef-owner Russell Ping said in the release. "The addition of the shortbread crust makes for the perfect sweet dessert that isn’t cake nor cookie. It’s just gooey butter! It’s been a favorite since my mom and I opened Russell’s in Fenton over 15 years ago.”

Russell's is using its Fenton location for gooey butter orders, given that operations are limited in St. Louis County due to the pandemic. 

“We recently expanded our Fenton location to offer more socially-distanced indoor dining for our guests, but now indoor dining is currently restricted," Ping said. "We made lemonade out of lemons and decided to turn that space into Gooey Butter Shipment Headquarters. We will continue to look for ways to survive this pandemic, and we hope a pan of Gooey Butter can be a taste of home for those missing St. Louis.” 

Seven flavors of the 8-by-8-inch dessert will be offered: original, chocolate chip, triple berry, pumpkin-walnut, cranberry-orange-walnut, lemon curd and snickerdoodle. The cakes start at $15.95, which does not include shipping and handling. Orders can be placed online on Russell's website.
