A longtime staple of the Dogtown bar scene is offering fans a new way to support its staff while also feeding those in need.
"Nourish the Neighborhood" is a new program from The Pat Connolly Tavern that allows customers to donate a meal to someone in need when ordering a meal from the bar. For $10, you can add a meal for someone else to your curbside pickup order.
Owner Joe Jovanovich says that this is not only a way to help feed people in the community, but will also help keep the tavern running. Meals will be made by the restaurant staff, and all proceeds from the program will go directly to keeping employees paid.
"Our hope is that if we got into the habit where folks were just tacking one or two of these onto orders they're otherwise placing, it incrementally could build up to let us hopefully help hundreds of folks over the winter," Jovanovich says. "The win-win of it all is that customers are donating to help us buy food that we're turning around and paying it forward to other families, but that revenue also helps us keep open. It helps us keep our staff working."
The goal is for these meals to be served hot and to be a balanced dinner plate – something that might not usually be the case with a donated meal. The plan is for every plate to include a protein, starch and fresh vegetable.
The program does not have one specific organization that it will donate meals to, but potential beneficiaries include charities like Beyond Housing, Epworth Children & Family Services and United 4 Children. And while Jovanovich certainly doesn't discourage anyone from donating to these groups directly – especially since his own background is in social work and nonprofit management – he does hope that "Nourish the Neighborhood" will be able to engage even more people in the tavern's customer base to give to those in need.
Those who want to donate a meal through "Nourish the Neighborhood" can do so by placing an order from The Pat Connolly Tavern or by donating directly to the program on the tavern's website.
