This summer, there's a new way to enjoy the cuisine from Little Fox in St. Louis.
Coming soon to Shenandoah Avenue is Little Fox Summer, an al fresco dining experience that changes up the way you can enjoy the restaurant's modern menu. While Little Fox Summer will officially launch July 24, the menu – which is also the summer menu for Little Fox proper – is available for takeout this weekend.
For owners Craig and Mowgli Rivard, the concept is a potential lifeline for the restaurant, which just opened in December.
"Really, it's to save Little Fox so it doesn't permanently close after being open for just three months," says Mowgli. "We did a grocery and wine pickup, and we did some takeout, and we did a couple weeks of our own patio, which is five tables. With doing those services, we were not able to break even."
Before the pandemic, the couple had invested in an option to buy a city-owned lot across the street. When the City of St. Louis announced permits for extended outdoor dining through Sept. 30, it opened up the perfect opportunity for the Rivards to serve more people out of their restaurant.
"The city's been really helpful," says Mowgli.
The pop-up concept will feature 20 tables under a tent in a parking lot across the street from the restaurant and six tables on an adjacent lawn, all socially distanced. Guests will place their orders at Little Fox proper, and when their food comes out on trays, a crossing guard will assist in safely crossing the street to one of the Little Fox Summer tables. Tables are available on a first come, first served basis.
Dishes on the menu include grilled chicken wings marinated in rosemary and anchovy, mussels cooked in white wine, a grilled summer vegetable noodle bowl and a grilled mahi-mahi sandwich. Refreshing bottled cocktails, canned beer and canned wine will also be available at Little Fox Summer, in addition to natural wines by the glass and by the bottle that the Fox Park restaurant is known for stocking.
"We spent a lot of time on the east coast [as private chefs], and during summers, we'd be working for families in the Hamptons," says Craig. "I'm sort of creating that fun, summer experience. Fun, warm weather food."
For those who want to enjoy the menu but prefer table service, Little Fox is serving the same menu at its five reservation-only patio tables. Aside from the service, the only difference will be a wider bar menu available to customers.
Little Fox returns for patio reservations July 23. Little Fox Summer launches July 24, and starting July 30, it will be open Thursday through Sunday. Little Fox Summer can also be rented for private events.
