Some of St. Louis' favorite ribs are headed to St. Charles County.
Pappy's Smokehouse, which has been serving up award-winning ribs in the Midtown neighborhood for over 12 years, is venturing outside of the city for the first time. The barbecue joint is slated to open its second location in late September or early October in St. Peters, Missouri, as first reported by St. Louis Magazine.
Pappy's managing partner Johh Matthews says that there were multiple reasons why the location made sense, including diners' willingness to go out to eat in less densely populated areas and a personal request from the developer to bring Pappy's in.
"This just seemed like a good opportunity to go to an area where we can expand a little," he says.
The menu will look similar to the menu at the Midtown location, offering ribs, beef brisket, burnt ends, pulled pork and more. The most notable difference will be a lack of fried items on the menu, at least to start. Currently, the St. Peters location does not have fryers or a kitchen hood, which means that steak fries, sweet potato fries and fried corn on the cob will not be available. Matthews says they are exploring other non-fried sides, such as cornbread, to add to the menu at that location.
The restaurant will be open five days a week to start, Wednesday through Sunday, and will have similar hours to the Midtown location, possibly stretching them a little later.
For Matthews, he hopes the new location will give even more exposure to the Pappy's Smokehouse name.
"I hope it just reinforces our brand," he says. "I'd like to do more in the future. I don't want to go crazy with expansion. It was never our intention. Our intention is to have quality food with a unique experience, but if we can create that in other locations that are thoughtfully put together, I am more than happy to entertain that idea."
