Civil Alchemy, Webster Groves’ quaint and curated general store, is offering a new service that has been a tantalizing triumph – a pre-order and curbside pickup service for wine, spirits and beer.
“We’ve had a very successful two weeks doing liquor pre-orders,” says chief operating officer Ian Van Dam. “We’ve had to pivot our business to what people need during the COVID economy. What do people need right now? Those things have changed so dramatically in a matter of three to four weeks, which is crazy.”
The pre-order program, as described on Civil Alchemy’s site, “aims to offer competitive prices on the beverages you love, from the store you love.” Expect to see local beers and spirits alongside spiked seltzers, canned cocktails, wine and more.
“Now that you can’t go to a bar or restaurant, there are a lot of people who are taking it upon themselves to learn how to make the cocktails that they’ve had at bars they really respect or value,” Van Dam says. “They are taking the time to really understand a different craft – whether that is drinking or mixology or anything.”
Pre-orders must be placed by 11:59pm on Wednesdays on the Civil Alchemy site for pickup on Friday (or any day following).
“It’s pickup at our back door,” Van Dam says. “It’s zero contact, and our customers love the fact that they can order things a couple days in advance and when it’s ready they can come to the back parking lot of a little boutique in Webster instead of having to go into a grocery store, which is very stressful for a lot of people. There are a lot of people who don’t want to put themselves in that situation if they don’t have to. They really are connecting with the idea that you can just do a really super simple pickup.”
Once orders are completed on Civil Alchemy’s site, an invoice will be supplied via email, which will also include pickup instructions. A text will also be sent once an order is complete.
“It feels very fulfilling, very rewarding, to offer people something they can use or need or want with the peace of mind of knowing it’s coming from a small business, a local business,” Van Dam says. “So things like our small foods, our wines, our spirits, our flowers – these are things that people are still really looking for right now, all for different reasons.”
Civil Alchemy has even introduced a new canned cocktail (only available for pre-order) in collaboration with STL Barkeep. The Drop It includes Civil Alchemy’s Truly Floral Blue Gin blended with hibiscus, lemongrass, ginger, dried apples and elderberries.
“We, much like everybody else, like businesses, like people, we are all adapting to this kind of new reality,” Van Dam says. “We are trying to make that easy and as seamless of a transition as possible for our customers who already love Civil Alchemy.”
