Two is company: The Royal and Dani’s Flour Pot Bakery announce plans to share the Cherry Street hot spot in Springfield, Missouri

The regally decorated Suite B at 1427 Cherry Street in Springfield, Missouri, will soon welcome a new tenant. B.J. Lowrance, owner of The Royal, and Dani Hunnell, owner of Dani’s Flour Pot Bakery, will share resources and operate their separate businesses from one location come late August.

“It’s always bothered me that this space isn’t used to its full capacity,” says Lowrance. “Being basically a bar, it doesn’t make sense for me to open before 4pm, and without adding a bunch of product, completely revamping my kitchen and doubling my staff, it didn’t make sense to be anything else. When Dani said she wanted more of a brick-and-mortar location, I thought it would be a great opportunity for the space to be used to its full capacity and add an incredible business to the area with minimal change to my own business.”

“I’ve always loved the idea of splitting space between two businesses,” adds Hunnell. “It seems like a more efficient way to do things if your business isn’t operating all day and night. Plus, The Royal is just plum adorable. Who wouldn’t want to share that space?”

Starting in late August, Tuesday through Friday from 7am to 1.30pm, guests can enjoy pies by the slice, sweet and savory pop tarts and savory hand pies from Dani’s Flour Pot Bakery. Hunnell also plans to offer a limited number of grab-and-go whole pies, take-and-bake pot pies and an array of baked goods such as cookies and scones.

Then, Tuesday through Saturday starting at 4pm and Sunday starting at 1pm, The Royal will take the reins, mixing creative cocktails designed by Rogan Howitt and dishing out small bites such as soft pretzels and house-seasoned and -fried chips with onion dip.

Dani’s Flour Pot Bakery also attends the C-Street City Market on Saturdays, but once the off-season approaches in October, she plans to be open on Saturdays at The Royal.

A number of Hunnell’s pies feature buttermilk bases; others, including the vinegar pie, are inspired by recipes that were common during the Great Depression. “The name [vinegar pie] is really daunting, but I promise it’s delicious,” she says.

Once she gets her footing at the new spot, Hunnell will reserve her trusty, yellow Pie Wagon for special events. Lowrance also plans to join the special events scene. He’s currently converting a 1960s Good Humor ice cream cart into a mobile bar cart, which he’ll bring to backyard parties, street fairs, corporate events and weddings.
