In Rogersville, Bub's Distillery Offers Moonshine Margaritas, Mules and More

Some fathers and sons bond by hunting or fishing. Spencer Detherage and his dad distill spirits in their garage.

Their hobby officially turned into a business in 2017, when Detherage opened Bub’s Distillery. Although the business didn't have a storefront open to the public, Detherage sold his handcrafted spirits, including gin and several flavors of moonshine, at the Farmers Market of the Ozarks.

In January, he and his father started renovating a building in Rogersville, Missouri, with plans to open in the spring. The coronavirus caused them to postpone their grand opening, but Bub's was finally able to open on May 19.

Bub’s Distillery produces three moonshines, gin and whiskey, the latter of which is currently sold out but should be back in stock in October. Detherage says he started distilling gin because a lot of distilleries overlook it. “I like gin but I am picky about it,” he says. “I wanted to tone it down and make it more citrusy, so I add more orange and lemon.”

Bub's Distillery is now open Tuesday through Sunday, and its free weekend concerts have become a popular attraction this summer. Located next to Pyramid Foods, the distillery has ample space for guests to spread out and enjoy a socially distanced night out.

Bub's hosts live music every Saturday and many Fridays, and food trucks rotate out each Saturday night. Guests can bring a chair, gather under the stars, sip on a libation and groove to the music.

As for those libations, Spencer serves alcohol-fortified slushies of varying flavors. Guests can also opt for a Margarita made with lemon moonshine or a Bloody Mary mixed with peppercorn moonshine. Cocktails are $5 for a single and $7 for a double while slushies range from $5 to $9, depending on the size.

The summer concerts have been a hit and will continue into the fall.

“It’s been good, a really good reception,” Detherage says. “We don’t have anything to compare it to because we don’t know what it would look like before this, but it’s been really good.”
