Indulge both your plant and caffeine fixations at Green House Coffee + Affogato Bar in Springfield, Missouri

A destination for indoor plant and affogato aficionados is now open in downtown Springfield, Missouri. Green House Coffee + Affogato Bar serves traditional espresso beverages and something for your sweet tooth.

The concept, created by Caleb Alwardt, takes full advantage of the natural light that pours into the Jefferson Avenue storefront. The coffee shop employs lush greenery as décor, but it also includes a retail section with plants from locally-owned and -operated Lee Botanical Co.

As far as libations go, the affogato menu follows a build-your-own format. First, guests pick a flavor of ice cream – the opening menu includes salted caramel, pumpkin cheesecake, honey green tea and vegan vanilla-coconut. Next, they choose the pour, such as espresso, chai, matcha or turmeric. The ordering experience ends with a topping and a sauce selection – think cacao nibs or candied walnuts and caramel or chocolate sauce.

Alwardt’s selection highlights Arkansas vendors: Green House stakes a claim as the first coffee shop in Springfield that uses exclusively Onyx Coffee Lab beans, and Loblolly Creamery provides four rotating ice cream flavors.

The Green House team put just as much effort into choosing quality ingredients as it did into selecting the tableware, scouring flea markets for glass teacups and plates for the deconstructed affogatos. “More than anything, presentation matters,” Alwardt says. “If it looks fun, it’s going to be fun.”

The menu also includes traditional espresso drinks, tea lattes and even a turmeric latte, and baker Crystallena Price whips up fresh baked goods, such as sweet potato cake and lemon bars, for the taking.

Alwardt – who honed his barista skills at places including European Café, Cherry Picker Package x Fare and the now-shuttered Rove Coffee – prioritizes livable wages and wants to create a welcoming place for the LGBTQ+ community. “I grew up when Starbucks was booming,” he says. “Coffee culture became part of the zeitgeist. When it came time to look for a job during college, I just happened to get one as a barista and stuck with it. I’ve always wanted to open a shop, and in the beginning of 2021, I realized there was room for more inclusive coffee spaces in Springfield – so I just went for it.”

When designing the interior, Alwardt envisioned a comfortable space that aligned with the company’s mission. In the shop’s sitting room, jewel-toned green couches and bubblegum pink tables create an inviting and light-hearted atmosphere.
