Hold the date syrup: The team behind Springfield's acclaimed The Date Lady is opening a café. Located right next door to its Commercial Street production facility, Café Dhibs opens for business on Sat., Nov. 23 serving coffee, baked goods and savory bites.
Since 2012, The Date Lady has been producing and internationally distributing items like its original date syrup, date sugar, chocolate spread and coconut caramel sauce. Next weekend, you can savor The Date Lady's products in everything from baked goods to a grab-and-go charcuterie tray.
Make your own date syrup or sugar at home to sweeten everything from cookies and brownies to pizza sauce and salad dressing.
"We're really food and coffee people, so [the café] is just another way to keep things interesting and be creative," says The Date Lady founder Colleen Sundlie.
But out of all the offerings, it's the café's namesake drink that has Sundlie the most excited. The Café Dhibs includes espresso, date syrup, steamed milk and whipped topping.
The drink holds sentimental value for Sundlie, who first tried the drink when she and her family were living in Al Ain, a city in the United Arab Emirates, for her husband's job. "They would have café dhibs at these really cool cafés that we would go to," Sundlie says. "It's now been a signature drink in our house for years. My kids love it, without the espresso."
Café Dhibs' grand opening celebration will be held Sat., Nov. 23 from 7am to 3pm. Sample the Café Dhibs drink, date shakes and other signature items and enter giveaways.
