High-end lounge Tabak Co. brings cigars, cocktails and more to downtown Springfield, Missouri

New to downtown Springfield, Missouri, Tabak Co. boasts a cigar shop, lounge and kitchen under one roof.

Owners Brian Cubic and Cody Hutchison aim to provide residents with a comfortable place to gather, work and enjoy their selection of cigars and pipe tobacco alongside coffee, cocktails, lunch or dinner.

“It’s a place where people can come and have drinks and enjoy themselves without the frustration of music that’s too loud or a crowd that they don’t want to be out in,” Hutchison says. “We’ve got nice, comfy couches and chairs for people to talk or have a casual meeting or do homework or drink a beer.”

Just off the square in the former Falstaff’s Local location (311 Park Central West), the space features straight lines, rich wood and bright white countertops. Hutchison says the bar side only required fresh paint and furniture, but they revamped the lounge side, eliminating the sports bar theme and adding a cigar humidor.

“We’re bringing a completely different experience with cigars,” Hutchison says, adding that their locker program allows regulars to keep a private locker with cigars, including four a month from Tabak Co.

Springfield natives and military veterans Cubic and Hutchison met during a 2013 Afghanistan deployment, and they’re excited to pursue this new path together. Hutchison cites now-shuttered Scotch & Soda as inspiration for their Prohibition-era cocktail menu.

“[Scotch & Soda] knew how to make those drinks and how to make them exactly right,” he says. “We’re trying to fill that space, and [those types of cocktails] go with the clientele that we’re trying to bring in. They’re for people who know their spirits.”

Open Monday through Saturday at 10am, guests can start with an Americano using Tabak Co.’s custom coffee blend from local roaster Fine Coffee Co. A highlight of the lunch menu, the Butcher’s Block burger features a patty of boar, Wagyu beef, elk and bison. Later in the day, move out to the patio for a cigar and spirit pairing or a house-reserve Old Fashioned accompanied by smoked pipe tobacco.

“People are ordering that nonstop,” Hutchison says. “The presentation when we burn that blended pipe tobacco adds a chocolatey, sweet aroma to the area. Every time I smell it, I get a huge smile on my face.”

Tabak Co. is open Monday through Wednesday from 10am to 9pm and Thursday through Saturday from 10am to 11pm.
