If you’re looking for a relaxing evening in the sun with a refreshing drink in hand, delicious food and great company, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better spot than The Well Bar, Grill and Rooftop.

The bar and grill offers urban rooftop dining for those looking for ideal patio seating in the hip Waldo neighborhood of Kansas City. The Well’s rooftop is lit with café lights for a relaxing, warm summer night under the stars, but you’ll also find plenty of umbrellas and shade for midday happy hours.

The Well opened in 2008 and has only picked up steam since.

“We specialize in slightly reinventing ourselves every year,” says co-owner Chris Lewellen. “We stay ahead of the curve, no matter what. You’ll find something new every time you come in.”

To that end, the menu changes four times a year – most recently in mid-June. After a rooftop renovation this winter, The Well introduced wine slushes to beat the summer heat, and the rooftop now has a section for lawn games along with some new outdoor couches for supreme relaxation.

“I had a passion for outdoor and rooftop seating and was looking all over for a location, but I always thought Waldo would be good,” Lewellen says. “I kept driving by the old Roscoe’s abandoned building – this was the place in Kansas City to go in the ’70s.”

Finally, in 2007, Lewellen and his brother bought the building, but it would still be a year and a half before they started construction efforts to turn the building into a viable restaurant. The Well saw a two-year honeymoon period with no competition moving into the neighborhood. It thrived because it appealed to a lot of different crowds, whether you wanted to watch a sporting event on one of its many TVs, host a private event, enjoy a casual happy hour or simply relax on the roof.

Today, The Well still features a variety of experiences for patrons: The rooftop is relaxed and social, and the more energetic main dining room has live music on the weekends and regularly broadcasts important sporting events on the TVs. There’s also a downstairs patio for large private parties, business meetings and more. Lewellen says it’s common for people to spend their whole evening at The Well, moving between the main dining room to the patios and back.

With 30 beers on tap, original and classic cocktails, 19 wines by the glass and more by the bottle, even the pickiest person could find something to drink. All these libations need a little grub to go with them. Try the Buffalo cauliflower bites and some fried cheese curds, or go for something more filling with an order of Memphis-rubbed flank steak or a build-your-own street taco platter. In June, The Well rolled out new menu items including East Coast-style lobster rolls, grilled salmon salad and a stacked caprese BLT.

The Well’s rooftop is one of the premier spots for al fresco dining in Kansas City. This summer, embrace the outdoors without sacrificing comfort and convenience; grab a pitcher of sangria or bucket of Corona, order up a fresh appetizer or entrée, and unwind as the sun makes a lazy trek across the sky.
