As an alternative to the ever-controversial holiday fruitcake, St. Louis’ 80 Proof Bakery specializes in desserts with a spirited kick. Inspired by recipes she learned from her mother during her childhood in Nigeria, entrepreneur Omobola “Bola” Taiwo-Akande bakes three varieties of Bundt cakes spiked with liquor – specifically rum, Irish whiskey and vodka – and is now in her third year of business. Moreover, she’s been experimenting with a trio of additional offerings: brown sugar-bourbon, mocha chocolate-rum and chocolate-brandy cakes.
