Kansas Citians can now enjoy a dazzling new view of the Country Club Plaza from sixteen stories up in the air. Prime Social, a new rooftop cocktail lounge, has opened at the top of the 46 Penn Centre building, ready to receive happy hour business crowds, visiting tourists and locals who are interested in enjoying a craft cocktail, local beer or glass of wine with some shareable bites while enjoying the Plaza from new heights.
This lively new rooftop cocktail lounge is owned and operated by Ohio-based Cameron Mitchell Restaurants and is the first of two concepts planned for the building. Upstairs, Prime Social delivers craft cocktails, beer and wine alongside decadent small plates, intended to give people a taste of what to expect from their fine-dining restaurant, Ocean Prime, which will open early 2022 on the third floor below. With a portfolio of over 20 different restaurant concepts, founder and CEO Cameron Mitchell is pleased to be bringing his own steak and seafood experience to Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza.
“I am fortunate to work with a team of restaurant professionals who each have at least 20 years of experience in the food, beverage and hospitality industry,” Mitchell says. “We never want to come off as a chain restaurant, because we aren’t. We believe that it is our people that make the difference; every night is like opening night for us.”
The cocktail menu features a list of 12 specialty cocktails, such as the Strawberry Fields made with Cazadores Silver tequila, lime, strawberries and hummingbird bitters served in a coupe glass with a single small green bud called “a buzz button.” Also known as Szechuan or Buddha buttons, they provide a tingling sensation in the mouth along with a bit of numbness, which some say brings out the flavors in a drink. Another drink with an eye-popping presentation is the smoked Old Fashioned made with Woodford Reserve, a bourbon-maple infusion and orange served under a giant cloche with mesquite smoke billowing around the drink.
If you have a larger party, consider one of the shareable punches served in impressively large-cut glass drink dispensers. Filled with ice, flowers and fruit, each cocktail is mixed and served to the table with matching rocks glasses. Choose from Spiced Sangria, Party Potion or The Ma’Homes made with Knob Creek bourbon, pomegranate, fresh lemon and Champagne.
It is also worth checking out the short list of nonalcoholic drinks, including the Bartenders Roulette, which allows the bartender to make something special by request. The beer list features mostly local and regional selections alongside national brands, and the wine list has enough selection for anyone to find something they would enjoy.
The food at Prime Social is luxe, clearly there to whet your appetite for when Ocean Prime opens its doors downstairs. The list of delicacies includes oysters on the half shell, jumbo shrimp cocktail, sushi rolls, nigiri, tempura-fried lobster tail, pizzas, sliders and charcuterie trays. However, there is one entrée for those who want to make a meal out of their visit: a 16-ounce prime KC Strip steak with steak sauce and sea salt fries for $78. The most decadent bite on the menu, however, is perhaps a single slice of A5 wagyu served like nigiri over sushi rice, brushed with togarashi, plum aïoli and sesame oil before being seared.
With floor-to-ceiling windows running the length of the room and views to the east and south, guests can see the entire Country Club Plaza and beyond. There is a small outdoor space with a firepit, but most of the seating is located inside. Reservations are a must, especially for a table by the window, but the bar is also available for walk-in traffic.
Prime Social is open Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 11pm, Friday and Saturday from 4pm to midnight and Sunday from 4 to 10pm.
