Chips and Coins Cuban Sandwich

A Cuban sandwich with tostones at Chips and Coins.

Part convenience store, part Cuban restaurant, Chips and Coins in Kansas City, Kansas, is open seven days a week, offering home-cooked daily Cuban specials in addition to salads, burgers and sandwiches.

Chips and Coins got its clever name from owner Mike Benitez, who originally opened the store in 2017 as just a convenience store, selling snack food (chips) and money orders (coins).

In May of last year, he opened a restaurant inside of his convenience store, offering home-cooked Cuban dishes, with four to five daily specials that remind him of home and his Cuban parents.

Try Chips and Coins' signature Cuban sandwich, which comes on housemade Cuban bread filled with sliced ham, roasted pork, cheese and pickles and then buttered, pressed and griddled until the bread is toasted on the outside and the insides are warm and gooey with cheese. Add a side of tostones, or fried plantains, with your Cuban sandwich and be sure to dunk them in their addictive housemade garlic sauce.

Take the time to sample around Chips and Coins' comforting Cuban menu. The picadillo is made with either ground beef or turkey that's sautéed with the salty and sweet combination of olives, capers and raisins. Try the picadillo with a side of boiled yucca or sweet plantains (known as maduros) – or both. Arroz con pollo is another delicious traditional chicken and rice dish that also comes with two sides.

Another must is the national dish of Cuba, ropa vieja, or stewed beef and vegetables that is then shredded to look like “old clothes,” the literal translation for the dish. It is served with two sides, and one should certainly be the Cuban-style black beans and rice.

All dishes are available for curbside carryout and can be found on most delivery apps. If you call in and order directly from Chips and Coins, the restaurant will offer free delivery within a 2-mile radius.

Chips and Coins is open Monday through Friday from 7am to 7pm, Saturday from 7am to 5pm and Sunday from noon to 5pm.
