Creative Culture opened in Westport this summer, billing itself as a safe place for people to get out of the house with friends or family and go create.

Encouraging creativity for all ages and skills levels, Creative Culture offers a private party room along with a variety of workshops taught by local artists. You can also just drop by and have a DIY ceramic or canvas painting experience in addition to being able to pot some plants or make a macramé wall hanger to take home.

Even if you aren’t particularly artsy or crafty, Creative Culture also makes eye-popping edible art in the form of milkshakes in fun flavors like s’mores, birthday cake, brownie fudge and Key lime, all of which come with some sort of confection sticking out of – or balancing on top of – the milkshake.

The milkshakes are reason enough to swing into Westport for dessert.

Each hand-crafted milkshake is $13. They take a bit of time to make, but patience is rewarded with a glass of creamy goodness that has confections heaped both into and on top of a mason jar, which can be taken home with you. The milkshake flavors will change often, with seasonal specials rotating through the menu.

Creative Culture’s newest milkshake flavor is "But First, Coffee," which features vanilla ice cream, espresso, whipped cream, espresso beans, biscotti and a macaron from Kate Smith Soiree, a boutique bakery located inside the Lenexa Public Market.

The idea for Creative Culture came from the mind of local business owners and married couple Dell Ann and Kelly Upp, who own and operate an event design and rental business based out of Manhattan, Kansas, with their showroom in Shawnee, Kansas.

In November, the couple made the decision to open a creative studio and milkshake bar, and by February they had signed the lease for their storefront at 207 Westport Road. In March, when the city closed down due to the global pandemic, the pair used that time to work on the buildout of their space. They finally opened their doors to the public in July and have been pleasantly surprised by the traffic and interest in what they are offering.

Enjoying a gourmet milkshake is just one of many creative experiences that guests can explore at Creative Culture.

The Creative Culture Studio is now open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 9pm, Sunday from noon to 5pm and closed on Monday.
