Tora Zushi

Tora Zushi is now open inside Strang Hall.

This April, Kansas Citians welcomed a variety of new restaurants and food-oriented retail options, and early summer looks to bring a wave of openings.

On Martini Corner, Cliff’s Taphouse opened at 3044 Gillham Road, in the former location of Ollie’s Local. Cliff’s Taphouse serves a broad selection of local beers with its menu of approachable, chef-driven dishes made with local ingredients. Two doors down, The Black Pantry also started welcoming customers, offering food, drink and personal care products exclusively sourced from Black-owned businesses.

A few miles away on 39th Street, the zero-plastic grocery shop Pantry Goods made the transition from being an online-only business to opening its first brick-and-mortar location. Customers here can still opt to order goods for delivery from Pantry Goods’ website, but now can also visit Volker to pick up Pantry Goods’ selection of produce, bulk grocery items, personal care items and more, all available in reusable or recyclable containers.

In Overland Park, Tora Zushi opened inside Strang Hall. Chef Brett DeHart (who also operates Strang Hall’s Fenix) specializes in both traditional sushi including sashimi and nigiri, as well as his own creations. The Strang Roll, for example, features tempura-fried crab, cream cheese, avocado and fresh tuna, drizzled with a yuzu-togarashi aïoli. Nearby at 95th and Nall, The Golden Scoop offers housemade ice creams, cookies and coffee in a comfortable shop staffed by people of differing abilities.

Finally, down in Olathe, El Mavri Seafood Bar & Grill offers a broad menu that includes familiar Tex Mex dishes, but also features dishes like ceviche served in a coconut and whole fried fish served with housemade salsas, rice and beans.

Within the next two weeks, look for the openings of the newest location of Snooze, an AM Eatery, in Overland Park, as well as chef Carlos Mortera’s Poi-O in Kansas City, Kansas (his first restaurant, The Bite, will also be closing after May 9). Taco Republic in Prairie Village, Third Street Social in the South Plaza and Providence Pizzeria in Westport are also expected to open within the next few weeks.
