After one of the more miserable, cold Februaries in recent memory, it seems possible that we are headed for a thaw that is both literal as well as metaphorical in the case of the restaurant and bar industry. Despite some of the coldest days ever recorded in KC falling this month, Kansas City still welcomed a few summer- and tropical-inspired concepts. Starting down south in the newly remodeled Red Bridge Shopping Center, Cookies and Creamery officially opened, specializing in colorful, hard-to-pass-up ice cream sandwiches, Sylas and Maddy’s ice cream, all-natural cotton candy and Shatto milk products.
In Overland Park, the Austin-based Summer Moon Coffee opened at 91st and Metcalf, the first location to open outside of Texas. Summer Moon is celebrated for its “Moon Milk” signature sweet cream and oak-roasted coffee blends.
Up in the Crossroads, HITIDES Coffee also debuted inside of Collective Ex, offering a cute Tiki-themed environment, tropical-inspired coffee and tea drinks (as well as traditional coffee offerings), as well as proprietary Donutology flavors and a selection of fresh bagels from Meshuggah Bagels. Also new in the East Crossroads is the Crossroads Market, which sells healthy grocery items and grab-and-go food and drinks, all of which has been sorely lacking in the neighborhood.
Finally, Avenues Bistro opened a carryout location in Kansas City, Kansas, in light of losing its Brookside lease.
This Thursday, the Stilwell opens in the brand-new Loews Kansas City convention hotel, with a menu designed by chef Patrick LeBeau (formerly of NoMI in Chicago). Also keep an eye out for movement on the new Made in KC location (which will become the local chain’s flagship) at Martini Corner, Providence Pizza’s new Westport location, possible news on Taylor’s Donuts in Lawrence (from the James Beard-nominated baker behind 1900 Barker), as well as a potential opening for Third Street Social’s newest location on Main Street in the South Plaza area.
