The Denver-based Snooze, an A.M. Eatery has a formula: serve generous, classic brunch items, loaded with flavor. Serve them with lots of cocktails and coffee, and provide a friendly, customer-oriented environment. It works – the chain now boasts over 40 locations, including its newest in Kansas City, which opened this past week.
Open every day from 6:30am to 2:30pm, the Westport location of Snooze is located on Broadway Boulevard, next door to Westport Ale House. It seats about 171 inside, with outdoor patio seating available for an additional 50 guests (the patio is also dog-friendly). The interior is welcoming, decked out in bright greens, yellows and orange. Large street-facing windows bring in lots of light.
The restaurant’s most popular dishes are its Benedicts. Guests can choose from eight options, including a chile verde "Bennie" with green chile-smothered tortillas and melted cheese with either pulled pork or barbacoa-style beef, pico de gallo and cojita cheese; as well as a Lox-n-Latke bennie with smoked salmon, poached eggs, cream cheese Hollandaise, fried capers, pickled red onions and pistou. A standout is the Habanero Pork Belly Benny, which features seared habanero pork belly atop a toasted English muffin with bacon-espresso jam, poached eggs, cream cheese Hollandaise and cranberry relish ($12.25-$16).
On the sweet side, Snooze offers a selection of French toast and pancakes. The popular Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes are topped with caramelized pineapple chunks, housemade vanilla crème and cinnamon butter, and the sweet potato pancakes come with housemade caramel, candied pecans and ginger butter. Gluten-free options are also available. A classic French toast is also on offer, as is the OMG French Toast: brioche stuffed with mascarpone and topped with vanilla crème, caramel, strawberries and toasted coconut ($8.75-$10.75).
Classic breakfast fare is also available at Snooze, including corned beef hash, topped with caramelized poblanos, onions and your choice of eggs. Omelets and a farmer’s style breakfast with eggs, your choice of bacon, sausage or soy chorizo, along with hash browns and toast, are additional options. And in a nod to its Denver roots, one of Snooze’s signature dishes is its Huevos Rancheros, which features black beans, jack cheese, a spicy, tangy ranchero sauce, three eggs and pico de gallo ($10-$12.25).
Snooze’s menu also includes a “plant-power” section, featuring vegetable- and grain-forward dishes like sweet potato hash, served in a soffritto with Tuscan kale, topped with over-easy eggs and gochujang. A couple of the dishes here can be ordered vegan. Bigger appetites can opt for shrimp and grits, with andouille sausage, peppers and leeks, breakfast pot pie with rosemary sausage gravy, or a towering reuben served on a pretzel roll ($10.50-$14).
Coffee and cocktails are no small part of Snooze’s success. A full coffee menu is available, including espresso, lattes and cortados, as well as nitro cold brew and matcha. Five different Bloody Marys are available, including the Thai Bloody: Snooze’s house Bloody Mary mix is blended with vodka, Sriracha, lime, savory fish sauce, fresh cilantro and basil for a spicy and flavor-packed pick-me-up. Several bubbly cocktails are also available, including the Palomimosa, made with sparkling wine, tequila, elderflower liqueur and grapefruit juice. Boozy coffee drinks include the Brew Me Up, Bourbon Cup, featuring bourbon, nitro cold brew, heavy cream and Slopeside maple syrup ($3-$12).
Snooze’s first weekend saw big crowds, and this is likely to continue. And with the soon-to-come addition of Atomic Cowboy, Denver Biscuit Co. and Fat Sully’s (which will be opening in one location about a block away and will also serving big breakfast fare and drinks) 2020 seems to be the year of the big boozy Westport brunch scene.
