Mid-Missouri whiskey lovers, get excited: the fourth installment of the "Beyond the Barrel dinner" will be hosted in Boonville this Sunday. Andrew Ruth, bar manager at Barred Owl Butcher & Table, and Ben Hamrah of Peachtree Catering and Beet Box will be serving up whiskey and dinner at Cooper's Ridge. Besides food and drink, Ruth will offer plenty of knowledge about whiskey.
"Basically, I talk about whiskey for about two hours," Ruth says.
For three years, Ruth has headed up the popular Barred Owl Butcher & Table bar program.
Guests will enjoy several whiskeys from the Cooper's Ridge collection paired with dishes created by Hamrah. While Ruth says they will concentrate on bourbons and rye whiskeys, guests will also try some Japanese, Canadian and Irish whiskeys as well.
"Each whiskey that we taste is just absolutely beautiful," he says.
The 28-seat restaurant, decorated with local artwork and an abundance of greenery, offers a small menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Over the course of the evening, attendees will learn about what taste should be expected from whiskeys, each whiskey's flavor profile and the different grains that go into each kind of whiskey.
"We're really going to delve into each whiskey, what it's made out of, who makes it and what it tastes like," Ruth says.
As for the food, it's always a surprise from Hamrah. The meal is typically about five courses and is served family-style. As for the cuisine, there are usually some Persian influences that are close to Hamrah's heart, but last time, he served up Japanese-influenced food for a change.
"Part of the fun is the surprise, but it is always incredible," Ruth says.
Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased through Every Event Gives. Aside from the food and drink, the ticket also includes round-trip transportation from Columbia to Boonville. A luxury shuttle will pick guests up from Peachtree Catering on Nifong and return them there at the end of the night.
"Whether you know a lot about whiskey or nothing about whiskey, as long as you like whiskey, it's going to be awesome," Ruth says.
