El Oso Grill on Wheels has popped the wheels off at a new brick-and-mortar location in downtown Columbia.
El Oso Mexican Grill opened in September in the former home of Lil Bit Cafe on Broadway. Owner Betsaida Estrada said that after she, her boyfriend and her boyfriend's brother, who were all born in Mexico, first launched the food truck back in May, they were surprised when it hit big success two months in. According to Estrada, people in the food truck business say it usually takes six months to be successful.
Estrada just happened to be driving by one day and saw the space was available, so she called the landlord. It ended up being the right location for them.
"We were wanting something not too big, not too small," she says.
The menu at El Oso includes everything that is available at the popular food truck, plus many more dishes to try. Besides the tacos served with cilantro, white onion, radish and lime, some of the plates have also become guest favorites. Estrada said that the chile relleno plate and the tamale plate are two of El Oso's best-sellers. Plus, with the popularity of shrimp and fish tacos at the El Oso food truck, they made sure there were plenty of seafood options on the new menu for guests to enjoy.
Estrada marinades all of the meats before they're cooked and says that while it's a little more work, it's worth it. "I think that's what gives it the flavor," she says.
When it comes to the new location, Estrada says that pretty much everything about this new step excites her.
"It's just really exciting that we have accomplished all of this in such little time," she says.
