B&B Bagel Co. is settling in to its second home in downtown Columbia, Missouri. The beloved bagel shop expanded in August, making things twice as nice for the “bagel snobs” who have flocked to the southside location for New York-style bagels over the past two decades. The new location also brings an expanded clientele, who, according to owner Brad Newkirk, particularly love a good egg sandwich. “Half of our business is Eggwiches,” he says. “We sell a lot more dozens down south, but even at lunch here, we’ll sell Eggwiches upon Eggwiches.”
The popularity of these quick meals is what Newkirk and his team hoped for with the downtown location, which offers a pared-down menu that focuses on easy grab-and-go options. And so far, customers haven’t minded the limited selection, which features favorites such as the Eggwich, veggie melt, pizza bagels, deli sandwiches and of course, New York-style boiled and baked bagels. “There haven’t been any complaints about the items we don’t have,” Newkirk says. “Everyone’s just really thankful that we’re here.”
B&B is one of the few places in Missouri where traditional New York-style bagels – with a crunchy exterior and chewy interior – can be found. Pair any of the items with a variety of bottled drinks available, or get your caffeine fix with a cup of joe from Camacho Coffee. Feel free to take your meal to go, find a comfortable seat at one of the few booths or tables, or walk just a few steps east of the shop to the shared patio space. But don’t count on this for a study space – there’s no public Wi-Fi quite yet.
B&B opened inside the former Cold Stone Creamery location just ahead of the start of Mizzou's fall semester, and in plenty of time to prepare for the game day rush. The gold walls in the new shop fit in nicely in Tiger Country, as did the tunes on the first football game day of the season. “We had a game day soundtrack on the radio and we had a lot of fun,” Brad says. “There’s certainly an energy in a college town on game day, and if we keep winning, it’ll get even better.”
That same positive energy has been flowing through the shop since day one; Newkirk says he’s surprised with just how quickly his staff’s loyalty to the new location has solidified. “We have one or two employees who are working out here now who came from the south store, and they already consider this their home,” he says. The same is true for customers, too. “It’s kind of funny; sometimes I’ll see the same customer at both stores on the same day,” he says. “I think it’s really a convenience thing, and we have really loyal customers. They want to help us out, they like our product, they know that we’re inexpensive and we’re going to take care of ‘em as far as the bagels and coffee and those sorts of things go.”
Newkirk and his team are looking forward to many more seasons of serving B&B's loyal customers – and welcoming new bagel snobs along the way.
