Arbor Lodging Partners and Chicago-based DMK Restaurants have revealed their plans to open a new Italian restaurant, cocktail speakeasy and coffee shop inside of Kansas City’s historic downtown Hotel Phillips.

Tavernonna Italian Kitchen will open inside the hotel along with a basement speakeasy, P.S., and a coffee shop, Kilo Charlie’s.

The restaurant will celebrate the rich, varied history of Italian food, wine and cocktails by using fresh, simple ingredients to create both traditional and contemporary dishes.

“Our goal is to develop memorable sensory experiences for locals and tourists alike; from music, to food, to décor, we want patrons to have a feeling of limitless options in a timeless space,” said Vamsi Bonthala, co-founder and CEO of Arbor Lodging Partners.

Tavernonna marks the first time DMK Restaurants has developed a restaurant and bar concept for a hotel. The team is working with Kraig Kalashian Architecture and Design (KKAD), based in New Jersey, as the architecture and design team for the project.

DMK Restaurants is also currently working on the menu, including sourcing ingredients from local farms and vendors who will be celebrated throughout the menu. This will give the restaurant a clear sense of place, while honoring the distinctive ingredients rooted in Italy.

“Tavernonna will honor the simplicity, versatility and quality of Italian cooking, while bringing an array of unique dishes and flavor profiles,” Bonthala said.

For breakfast, Tavernonna will offer a bread and jam plate featuring Fervere bread and housemade focaccia served with honey ricotta, butter, sea salt and housemade jams. For lunch, you can expect a BLT flatbread with smoked bacon, Tuscan kale, tomatoes and mozzarella.

Slide in for happy hour and you’ll be treated to crudo, or a raw bar including daily oyster selections, fluke and salmon. At dinner, you’ll want to consider the housemade ravioli with goat cheese, tomato fondutta and mint pesto. Finally, for dessert, you can end your meal with chocolate served with Tuscan olive oil and sea salt on grilled bread.

“Our goal has always been to create the most craveable dishes in every city we embark on – we’ve done this in Chicago and now we’re excited to do the same in Kansas City,” said David Morton, co-owner of DMK.

The remodel of the restaurant, bar and coffee shop is expected to finish before the end of this year.
