Crown Valley Brewing & Distilling Company will be unveiling a new spirit that hasn't been seen in these parts in quite a while, at least not legally.
Missouri Moonshine will be unveiled at a special first release event on Sat., Dec. 10, from 11am to 6pm at Crown Valley's facility in Ste. Genevieve, Mo.
The 100-proof white whiskey will be available in 750 mil bottles for $30, and the first 100 bottles will be hand-signed by Crown Valley's master distiller, Scott Eckl.
Bryan Siddle, Crown Valley's director of operations, says the idea for the moonshine came from the backwoods distilling heritage of the area.
"When I first came down here 10 or 11 years ago, one of my first initiations was to have some old country moonshine," Siddle says. "It's a dedication to the history of the area more than anything."
Although it may be an homage to the era of illegal spirit-making, this Missouri Moonshine will be a little more sophisticated than the homemade hooch of years past. Siddle says he'll be selecting specialty shops, bars and restaurants in the area to carry the spirits.
"Typical old-fashioned moonshine was made from a corn base, and this is actually a malt base so it's what a young, white whiskey would be before it went into the barrel to age," Siddle says. "It has a really great nose from the malt, and when you're drinking it, its very smooth but then it warms you up all the way down. You can definitely tell it's 100 proof."
