Copia Restaurant & Wine Bar, in collaboration with Randall's Wines and Spirits, is hosting a Sommelier Showdown on Thu., Aug. 2, that will pit two of St. Louis’ top sommeliers against each other in a three-round food-and-wine-pairing competition.
Starting at 7pm that evening, advanced sommelier Keith Herrick of A. Bommarito Wines will square off against advanced sommelier and Rudd Scholar Andrey Ivanov.
Guests at the competition will get to partake in a three-course tasting menu. Each course will be paired with two wines, one selected by each contestant. At the end of each course, diners will decide which sommelier chose the best pairing. After three plates, the winner will be declared Sommelier Showdown Champion.
Challenging the sommeliers will be Copia's chef Dave Rook. Round one of the competition will challenge the sommeliers to pair Asian flavors as guests enjoy Copia's duck pot stickers with Szechuan ginger glaze.
In round two, the combatants will face the dreaded vegetable course, asparagus atop a vegetable polenta cake with Champagne cream sauce. Finally, the sommeliers will be given one last chance to woo the crowd as they pair wines with sea scallops, a jalapeno potato cake and sweet corn relish.
Tickets for the event are $35 and can be reserved by calling Copia at 314.241.9463. Anyone seeking more information about this or future Sommelier Showdown events can call Randall's Wines and Spirits at 314.865.0199.
