For the entire month of July, St. Louis-area restaurants are uniting to help Operation Food Search alleviate hunger in the St. Louis area through a special campaign: Tomato Explosion!
Chefs have whipped up special tomato-themed dishes for the campaign, and as a proud sponsor, we will be featuring one every weekday with the chefs' inspirations starting today.
Restaurants will donate a portion of proceeds from each dish. Get all the details and a list of participating restaurants here!
Today's Featured Dish: Pizza

Executive chef Joshua Wedel on getting behind the campaign:
Inspiration behind the dish: "We have a brick oven in our restaurant, and one of our featured items, especially for baseball, is pizzas. So, we chose to sell pizzas for Operation Food Search because they all have some component dealing with tomatoes."
Other fun tomato-centric dishes: "Currently we are using tomatoes in our salmon dish. We are making a tomato-caper relish to go with the salmon. In the past, we have made sauces out of tomatoes, like a smoked tomato emulsion involving cooking tomatoes over a double boiler and then incorporating butter and olive oil into them."
Why tomatoes are great: "The tomato is such a great product because it is so versatile. There are so many things you can do with a tomato from making sauces, relishes or serving it just as it is with salt or olive oil. It is a well-rounded ingredient that is used in so many recipes."
Deciding to support Operation Food Search: "As a leading hotel, we are devoted to giving back to the community. We as a team thought this campaign would be a great way to help people who are hungry in the area."
In your opinion, why is Operation Food Search's mission to alleviate hunger in the St. Louis area important
Importance of the campaign: "With today's economy and what is going on around the world, there are a lot of people who go hungry every day. By supporting this campaign, we can help to alleviate some of the pain of those people. As a country, we do help a lot of people overseas, but sometimes we need to help the people who are here in the United States and in the St. Louis area."
