Pour an artist a cocktail to “stir the creative juices,” then hand over a Sharpie and a napkin. What doodle will result? We find out in this just-for-fun Friday series.

The Cocktail: The Knickerbocker Lofts from Lola — an urban ice pick featuring a combination of Jeremiah Weed sweet tea vodka, Chambord raspberry liqueur and ice tea, garnished with raspberries

The Artist: Jane Linders, an award-winning photographer with a passion for Polaroid transfers. The process, as described on her Etsy site, results in a mono-print with a old-fashioned, hand-tinted look. The subjects of her focus range from roadside attractions like the Elvis Is Alive Museum to the strangely macabre “bone to alien” X-ray Terrestrials, animal skull slides exposed onto dental transparencies. Not only has Linders shown locally in many St. Louis galleries, her work has also been exhibited nationally at venerable institutions like the Smithsonian, and featured in various arts publications. What this list of kudos can’t convey is how full of cool ideas she is, or the hilarious way she communicates them. In her wacky tales of past misadventures at the desert art festival Burning Man, of the hand-writing analysis that deeply questions her day job career choice and of why the trunk of her car overflows with glass aerial defense mapping plates from the 70s, Linders triggers both laughter and thought with a wicked combination of originality and candor.

What made you choose Lola's The Knickerbocker Lofts?

Linders: Usually I drink beer. But beer is not a cocktail. I just liked the name of this drink. It tastes pretty good, too. It could be dangerous because you don’t sense the booze right away. Knickerbocker. What a great word. Isn’t that some kind of golfing pants? I think I went on a tour of those lofts once. My husband and I seriously need to move Downtown. We live in North County, and everything takes 30 minutes to get to in a car. Here I could just walk to a restaurant and be eating something like this great spinach salad in a few minutes.

What sort of restaurants do you like here in St. Louis?

L: One of my favorite cafés is Sweet Art: I could eat the Carrie, their vegan BLT, all the time. I bought every type of fake bacon being sold at Whole Foods trying to duplicate the “bacon” on that sandwich, with no luck. Technically, I don’t eat meat. Yeah, I know this salad has bacon in it. I can’t quite shake my need for bacon. It’s more like candy than meat. I also really love Spiro’s.

What kind of food do you eat at home?

L: I really hate to cook. I just do not get why people like to cook. But I come from a long line of bad cooks. It may be genetic. I’m 6’1” tall, and I need to eat, or I get scary skinny. I do love good food. I just don’t want to make it. We go out to our neighborhood Thai restaurant all the time. I mean all the time. It’s about 5 minutes away. They don’t even ask what we want any more; my red curry just magically appears. Once a hotel chef lived next door to us and would bring us gourmet leftovers. What a dream, to be married to a chef. It was the best stuff ever. I used to hide those meals in a waffle box from my kids. I couldn’t waste that wonderful stuff on kids. They have no palate. Let them eat SpaghettiOs.
