When the nominees for the James Beard Awards were announced earlier this year, St. Louis wasn’t lacking for representation. With five semifinalists hailing from under The Arch, Kevin Lemp knew that he wanted to do something special.

“We wanted to celebrate our city’s relationship to food and how awesome of a feat it truly is to have five nominees come from St. Louis,” explains the co-owner and president of 4 Hands Brewing Company. “It’s really a great time to be eating in St. Louis.”

The culmination of that desire is found in 4 Hands newest beer, Foundation. Working with Gerard Craft, Kevin Nashan, Josh Galliano, Kevin Willmann and Salt restaurant, the goal behind the Downtown brewery’s newest beer was to incorporate some of the favored ingredients from each Beard Award nominee. Ginger, basil, lemon balm and organic peach juice are just a few.

“It’s difficult to get these guys together for something like this because everyone’s obviously so busy,” says Lemp about the effort. “But we’re excited for the results.”

The blonde ale is slated to be finished in late August/early September, and will be available in the tasting room at 4 Hands as well as at each participating restaurant. And if the idea of a beer made by a group of super-chefs wasn’t enough to sway you, a percentage of the sales of Foundation with be donated to charity.
