There are many things Michael Wilkes has enjoyed since opening the first Missouri location of the Original Fried Pie Shop a year ago. Perhaps the most satisfying, though, is the response from his customers the first time they dig into his sweet and savory southern-fried offerings.
“It feels great to have people say, ‘Oh my goodness, that is good and just go on and on about it or get on their phone and start telling their friends about it and posting it to Facebook,” says Wilkes, a co-owner of the Eureka, Mo., shop.
The pies have not only amassed a local fan base but also a following among tourists, who are either curious about the place when they see it from the highway or familiar with the franchise, which boasts 11 locations in Texas, two in Arkansas and one in Oklahoma - the original.
The Original Fried Pie Shop offers made-from-scratch fruit and nut, cream and meat pies all filled with fresh ingredients. An open kitchen lets customers watch the pie-making process, and Wilkes and his crew keep the atmosphere fun and family friendly.
For those who haven't tried out the pies - or for those who have and are hungry for more - the shop's offering 10-percent off any purchase (excluding dozen prices) all day long on Sat., Aug. 11, in honor of its one-year anniversary this month. The store’s hours that day are 10am to 9pm.
