Rue Lafayette will be in full celebration mode this weekend.

For starters, the city of St. Louis has issued a proclamation declaring July 14 as Rue Lafayette Day. The LaFayette Square café/boutique received the honor for its “contributions throughout the city” and work in turning “an old, dilapidated building” into “something spectacular,” says Angela Thompson, administrative assistant in the mayor’s office.

The owners did a total rehab on the building, which dates back to the 1920s. The process took a year to complete, with Rue Lafayette opening for business in 2009.

It’s not uncommon for businesses that work toward the betterment of St. Louis to be rewarded with proclamations, Thompson says. Last month, there were several in Soulard that received the recognition to mark 100-plus years.

To celebrate the proclamation, Rue Lafayette will be serving complimentary cocktails and “outrageously delicious” cake at 2pm on Sat., July 14, and Sun., July 15.

As Sat., July 14, also happens to be Bastille Day, and in honor of the French national holiday, Rue Lafayette is featuring a special reveal of Bella’s private label reserve wine. More details here.
