This November, Balaban’s will add a new private event space and an intimate wine room for dining and housing of its Library Wines.

On Fri., Aug. 31, the Chesterfield wine cellar and tapas bar took possession of an additional 2,046 square feet of adjacent space in the Dierbergs at the corner of Clarkson and Baxter, expanding its total space to 6,604 square feet in a lease agreement with Dierbergs.

“Demand for us to accommodate private and corporate parties increased since opening in November 2009,” says Brian Underwood, co-owner of Balaban’s with Steve McIntyre.

Open for bookings starting Mon., Nov. 19, the new space already has a number of events booked, according to Underwood. Balaban’s plans to take reservations and actively market the space through the holiday season.

The wine store, restaurant and deli will not close for the renovations, which start next week on the new space and will take six to seven weeks, Underwood says.

To continue their retail wine and restaurant concept, Balaban’s will carving a unique walk-in wine cellar for private dinners of six and for display of their Library Wines, special wines from the original Café Balaban cellar, out of the space. The lease also brings them private event space for 80 dining or 100 for cocktails.

“With state of the art audiovisual capabilities in the new space, we will book private and corporate parties, weddings, rehearsal dinners, business luncheons, all types of events, and we will still service our wine store and café clientele in the original space.”

Balaban’s also plans to use the new space to add to their program of wine tastings, wine classes and wine dinners, all instrumental in landing the restaurant’s promotion to a Wine Spectator Restaurant Best Award of Excellence this year for the wine cellar.

“The new space will accommodate wine dinners for groups from eight to 80 or two separate groups of 40 dining formally; we gain a lot of flexibility in how we serve and provide for our customers going forward,” Underwood says.

Expansion of the Balaban’s kitchen as well as expansion of their catering and deli operations, additional bathrooms and integration of the original wine bar with the new space complete the renovation plans.
