When it comes to coffee, John Clopton, owner of Frostbite Ice Cream, has, as he calls it, a “pretty huge addiction.”
So, he was instantly intrigued when Kuva Coffee Co. owner Tim Drescher reached out to him in August regarding a possible partnership with Frostbite to make a coffee ice cream.
At the time, Clopton already offered a whole bean coffee ice cream, but he was thinking about changing to a new provider.
“Talk about perfect timing,” Clopton says, who decided to meet with Drescher to talk about the opportunity. “We talked about our businesses, traded stories of how we got started and discovered there were lots of similarities between our two companies.
“He'd also brought a pound of his Café Peru Chilchos coffee beans. He told me about his partnership with the The William L. Brown Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden, and it seemed like a good fit.”
After the meeting, Clopton went home and brewed some of the coffee. “It had a very rich, earthy flavor, and I thought it'd make a coffee ice cream,” he says.
Clopton premiered the coffee ice cream creation at First Friday at the St. Louis Science Center, and the new sweet treat received a strong reception. The next day, he dropped off a couple pints for Drescher at his booth at the Tower Grove Farmers market. Drescher ended up polishing off the entire pint, and he told Clopton he was “very impressed.”
The coffee ice cream will make another appearance, this time on Friday at the Show Me the Blog forum. And, Clopton, who does not have a storefront for Frostbite, is currently working out a deal with a small, local company that would handle shipping of the ice cream directly to customers.
More details on the deal – and where and how you can get in on the new Frostbite/Kuva Coffee ice cream – as we receive them.
